Running a station when the network drops

Forecourts are not offices. Connectivity comes and goes, and the software has to keep up with the shift rather than the other way round.

A cloud system that stops working when the signal drops is a liability on a forecourt. Readings still need to be taken, deliveries still arrive and the shift still has to close. If the app cannot keep up, people fall back to paper, and the digital record is incomplete from that moment on.

Capture first, sync later

The Petronyx mobile app stores your work on the device and keeps a queue of changes waiting to be sent. Readings and shift entries can be captured without a connection. When the device is back online, the queue is sent in order.

What happens when two people edit the same thing

Offline work raises a fair question: what if two people change the same record while disconnected? Each record carries a version. If the version on the server has moved on since you started editing, your save is not silently applied over someone else's work. Petronyx asks for the latest version to be reviewed first.

Your local changes come first

One of the fixes we shipped this year makes sure local changes are pushed before the app pulls a fresh copy from the server. The order sounds technical, but it is the difference between keeping an attendant's offline readings and quietly replacing them.

Security does not switch off with the signal

A phone on a forecourt can be picked up by anyone. The app supports a biometric lock, sign-in tokens are kept in the device's secure storage, and managers can revoke a device session from the web if a phone goes missing.

Habits that help

  • Open the app at the start of the shift while you have signal, so the latest station data is on the device.
  • Let the app reconnect before closing the shift, so every reading is on the server when the stock sheet is reviewed.
  • If a save asks you to review the latest version, read what changed before you continue.
